Our Community Commitment

Commitment to Our Community

We believe that making any investment that we can make in the community through hands-on service or financial support improves the success of the community and, thereby the success of the bank. The Board of Directors has established a goal of investing 10% of the bank’s net income each year in the San Luis Valley community endeavors. The board believes this is a key part of the bank’s effort to fulfill its mission statement.

Financial Support

Over the past 10 years, we have invested over $2,425,000.00 in local organizations and community events.

Scholarships

We offer scholarships to qualified candidates from both Adams State University and Trinidad State Junior College (Valley Campus). Applications are available at each campus, and completed forms must be returned directly to the institution.

Eligibility Requirements:

The student, the student’s parents, or the grandparents must be members of San Luis Valley Federal Bank for at least 12 months. Must maintain a grade point average 2.5 for the scholarship to be renewed.

Spirit of Giving

A Member Directed Donation Program

The Spirit of Giving program started in 1999. Our members may cast one vote per account to designate a share of the $35,000 to be donated to their favorite SLV community non-profit organization. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, votes are collected. We strongly believe in this program and cherish the participation that it brings to our community. Seeing our members vote and cheer on their favorite non-profit organization is inspiring.

To learn more, please visit our Spirit of Giving page.

We Care, We Share

An Employee Directed Donation Program

While this program is similar to Spirit of Giving, rather than member-directed, it is directed by our employees instead. A total of $121,000.00 has been given back to our local community since this program started in 2015. Each employee selects a local SLV non-profit to receive a contribution of $250 as part of our community investment program. In 2023, 39 different non-profit organizations received a portion of the donation. We appreciate the hard work these non-profit organizations do for our community. By supporting these local organizations, we hope to help our community grow and prosper.

BOCES Educator of the Year

Starting in 2012, we partnered with SLV BOCES to recognize outstanding teachers from each SLV school district. Every year, each SLV school district and SLV BOCES selects one teacher from each district to be nominated for the Educator of the Year. Each nominee receives a cash award and Certificate of Recognition from San Luis Valley Federal Bank.

Community Involvement

July 4th Firework Show

Since 1997, we have partnered with the City of Alamosa to sponsor a free fireworks show at the Alamosa Fair Grounds.  Some of the Bank’s staff are part of the licensed pyrotechnic team that puts on the show.

Monte Vista Ski-Hi Stampede

Each year, we support Colorado’s oldest professional rodeo by sponsoring the Specialty Entertainment Act. This July event is the largest community event for the year in the San Luis Valley.

Civic Involvement

Our staff is involved in numerous clubs, boards, non-profits, events, charities, schools, and churches. They volunteer hundreds of hours each year to these important community groups.

Community Reinvestment Act

At San Luis Valley Federal Bank, we are deeply committed to serving and supporting the communities we call home. As part of this commitment, we adhere to the provisions of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), a federal law designed to ensure that financial institutions actively meet the credit needs of the communities they serve, particularly low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

As part of our compliance with the CRA, we maintain a Public CRA File, which is available for review by members of the public upon request. This file contains information regarding our efforts to meet the credit needs of our community, including details on our lending, investment, and service activities in low- and moderate-income areas.

Our Public CRA File includes:

  2. Investment Initiatives: Details on our investments in community development projects and organizations aimed at revitalizing and strengthening underserved areas.

  3. Service Programs: Descriptions of the various community service programs and initiatives we support to address the needs of our community.

  4. CRA Performance Evaluations: Reports from regulatory agencies assessing our compliance with the CRA and our efforts to fulfill its objectives.
